About
Born to Puerto Rican and African-American parents in Chicago, Illinois, Isaac LaVigne is a drummer and multi-percussionist who grew up in a rich musical environment impacted by two complementary cultures. Although neither of his parents are musicians, Isaac took a liking to music at a young age, learning piano, drum set, and classical percussion. His passion for music and admiration for his parents have instilled in him the principles of working harder than others AND enjoying the moment. Isaac graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas (Denton, TX), graduating in December of 2023.
He is a firm believer in making sure that people are heard because their stories are important. Sharing your story may be the only way to reach others whether that is through words or music. He understands that each individual is influenced by a collection of one’s upbringing and life experiences. It is the culmination of these things that help shape and define the unique ways in which we as individual artists can communicate with our audience. The discovery and growth of our own ‘voice’ is what we use to present our personal beliefs and values in an effort to truly inspire the next generation of artists. Isaac’s musical philosophy is also rooted in the importance of establishing genuine and meaningful relationships with not just musicians, but others outside of music. Learning from business people, financial advisors, filmmakers, etc. offers a unique perspective that promotes growth as musicians, educators, and individuals. Demonstrating a genuine connection with others is what expands our capacity to learn and all of us can always learn more.
After performing various styles of music including, jazz, funk, hip-hop, Brazilian styles, and Caribbean (Afro-Puerto Rican, Afro-Cuban, and Dominican) styles, Isaac desires to grow in his ability to perform and teach the music of different cultures to all people. He endeavors to play a variety of styles authentically, demonstrating historical knowledge to his audiences. Isaac is a three-time Downbeat Student Music Award winner. He has been fortunate enough to perform with the likes of Kurt Elling, Miguel Zenón, Conrad Herwig, Ignacio Berroa, and the famed UNT One O’Clock Lab Band.
Isaac is a freelance musician and private lesson instructor who is growing in his ability to compose and arrange music. Additionally, Isaac has career aspirations to better understand the business side of music, which will make him a better marketer and entrepreneur. Isaac seeks to become one of a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of tradition and innovation.
Isaac truly has a love for sharing Jesus. In his spare time, Isaac enjoys both playing and watching a myriad of sports, cooking Puerto Rican food, hanging out with his family and friends, and staring at the wall to let his mind rest from the busyness of life.
Isaac LaVigne plays Gretsch Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Meinl Percussion, and LP Latin Percussion.
